Bandung is located in Jawa Island, West Java Province, with the large more than 167 km2 and total population 2.510.982 people. It is 2nd largest metropolitan area, 4th most popular city in Indonesia, and one of the most densely populated cities in Asia. Bandung is elevated 786 m above sea level, and has relatively year-around cooler temperature than most other cities in Indonesia and can be classified as humid. The average temperature is 23,6 C throughout the year, with the wet season starts from November and will be ended on April, just like the other cities in Indonesia. The city lies on the river basin and surrounded by volcanic mountain, which provides the city with a good natural defense system. The Bandung basin is an important source of water for drinking water, irrigation, and fisheries. Long term volcanic activity has created fertile andisol soil in the north part of Bandung, suitable for intensive rice, fruit, tobacco, tea, and coffee plantation.
Bandung has so many historical event, with the most famous is the first Asian-African Conference. It was held in 1955, which also known as Bandung Conference. It attended by head of states representing 29 countries and colonies from Asia and Africa. The conference venue was at Gedung Merdeka, which announced 10 points of declaration on world peace promotion and opposition against colonialism, known as Declaration of Bandung, which followed by wave of nationalism movements around the world and remapped world politics. This conference was also the first international conference of people of color in the history of mankind.
Beside Gedung Merdeka, there are many other historical architecture in Bandung. For example Gedung Sate, the center of governance in Bandung, Gedung Bank Indonesia, Aula Barat and Aula Timur of Bandung Institute of Technology, which mixed Western style and Sundanese style.
There are hundreds of public and private schools in Bandung, and at least 16 universities and 45 professional schools. Education from social sciences, technology, until tourism education can be found in one of those universities. Established at 1920, Bandung Institute of Technology is the oldest and one Indonesia's prestigious technical university. In the north of Bandung, there is the one and only observatory in Indonesia, Bosscha Observatory. It was built at 1923, and completed at 1928. In 1959, the observatory was included as part of the Astronomy department of Bandung Institute of Technology.
Most of Bandung population are Sundanese descent, but there are many other ethnics living here too, such as Javanese, Batak, Padang, etc. Here, a cultural atmosphere can be experienced. There is a famous place called Saung Mang Udjo, where Sundanese traditional bamboo musical concert performed by a small group of children with colorful and beautiful dances can be found. This traditional bamboo instrument, called Angklung, was made of parallel bamboo tubes tuned to specific frequences with a hammer and is shaken to produce certain tones.
To enjoy natural scenery, there are many places can be found. Ciwidey for example, has an exotic White Crater and fresh cold mountain. White Crater looks like a lake surrounded by mountains with the warm and sulphur contained water, and the sun's ray frequently change the color of water from milky into bluish green. Ciwidey also has forest and tea plantation, which offer an opportunity for natural adventure. Along the Ciwidey road, there is a Strawberry plantation where visitor can pick the fresh and ripe strawberry, and buy strawberry jam and syrup as well. Another beautiful and famous natural scenery in Bandung is Tangkuban Perahu mount. It is a volcano which has distinctive shape, like an upside-down boat. There is a folk tale about Tangkuban Perahu, where a son fell in love with his own mother and wanted to married her. To prevent the marriage, the mother asked her son to make a big boat only in one night. Because of failed to fulfill his mother request, the son got mad and kicked his unfinished boat, resulting in the creation of Tangkuban Perahu. However, it's just a folk tale.
Bandung also famous of fashion and culinary. There are many factory outlets, boutiques, stores, and even a one day market which sell fashionable clothes for everyone, from a little babies up to an old man, with various and up to date model and price. Bandung, as the center of fashion of Indonesia, provides international branded clothes as well as local product clothes, which price from less than 1 US$ up to more than hundreds dollar. Many people from surrounding area such as Jakarta, until foreign tourists from Malaysia, enjoy their weekend here just to do shopping.
It is right that Bandung is a paradise for culinary destination. Many foods from all parts of Indonesia can be found here. Sundanese, Javanese, Padang, Chinese, Japanese, and even Western food can easily be found on almost along roads of Bandung. Visitors can choose which kind of food they like, from the first class restaurant, family restaurant, until roadside vendors. There also many roadside vendors which sell foreign food such as Japanese and European food with an incredibly cheap price. Don't worry about the taste, it is not less than restaurant food taste, with more reachable price of course.
